In spring, 2006, I was visiting the French "Côte d'Emeraude", near Saint-Malo in Brittany...
I had been fascinated by the huge sea-side houses of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries which follow and often tower above the coast in Dinard, Saint-Lunaire or Saint Briac...
Most of the time built by English people, these "folies", as we call them here, remind me strangely the atmosphere of Alfred Hitchkock's certain movies, as far as it is in autumn, with a particularly grey and disturbing sky that I chose to paint them... psychosis...
Other colours, other lights, I decided to continue this series in spring, 2008...

The "Brut de Shanghai" series - 2OO5
The "Dinard Folies" series

"The big cities are sources of inspiration to me and give me a lot of sensations and emotions. And emotions are motive to restitute dynamics. 3O years ago, for me, the City of all architectural and urbanistic phantasms used to be New York where I made 2 series of paintings in 1991 and in 2OO3.
Now, one of the most fascinating City is Shanghai. Entire districts are disappearing, at the same time as 1,2OO feet (and more) towers are growing at a staggering speed.
After a series of paintings in South Morocco in 2OO4 - ground architecture - I was looking for an full rupture and I wished this 2 monthes immersion in this megalopolis - steel and glass architecture - gigantic City of all the contrasts with a future worthy of science fiction.
This series “Shanghai” is also my first one in Asia.

Morocco - 2OO4

Having briefly tasted the colors and lights of Morocco in 1999 during my "Paris-Dakar" sequence, I undertook throughout autumn of 2004 a large series of paintings live from the Cherifien Kingdom. In order to better absorb the surroundings, I chose to travel the Paris/Marrakech route by car. This led Charles and I from Tanger to Marrakech, where we established our 'home base'. The traditional Moroccan architecture, that of the towns, but also that of the villages, as well as the grandiose landscapes of the Atlas, the Drâa valley or that of Dades, were all on the agenda of this new artistic 'marathon'.

Bridges of Fame - 2OO3

At the fall of the year 2OO3, I took advantage of my 2 exhibitions "Colorado" and "Motels of the Fifties", in Las Vegas, to perform this new series of large paintings during this new stay in the USA. 2 weeks in San Francisco, then 2 weeks in New York to paint Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, Brooklyn and other Manhattan bridges... a performance I was thinking about for a very long time...

Colorado
Motels of the Fifties
Les toiles seront en ligne à partir du 10 avril 2002

It was in the fall of 2OO1, to avoid the worst of the heat, that I chose to tackle Colorado. Planning a 5O day trip, I began with the Grand Canyon - "a painter's nightmare" according to David Hockney (I would not deny this) - and followed with the Page (Arizona) and Moab (Utah) areas with some obligatory detours, following John Ford's tracks at Monument Valley, and venturing into the fiery furnace of Death Valley. Over 7 weeks, regardless of atmospheric conditions, equipped with a pickup vehicle and lodging in motels, I painted a set of 4O large, acrylic canvases that depict the amazing natural architecture of the area. In absolute contrast, it was in Las Vegas, an artificial oasis in the depth of the desert, with it's kitsch and delirious motels, that I ended my "artistic marathon". Charles Guy, companion in my travels - as he is in my life - took part in this adventure, acting alternately as my assistant, the cameraman, the itinerant webmaster... and, especially, the photographer along our 6,OOO mile- long trip.
We invite you to to discover our "Roadbook".

Live from Western America. Deserts, canyons... and other natural architectures...

The Paris Opera - 2OOO

With the authorization of Hugues Gall, Director of the Paris Opera, I was able to paint for two years in this parisian landmark of history and art. From the theater to the stage, from backstage to the rehearsal rooms, I traveled through the baroque universe open to the public, as well as places more mysterious and secret which are filled with the essence of the people who work there daily. Mise en scene, costumes, sets...

The "Répétition" (Rehearsal) series : 50 paintings - acrylic on card board - 100 x 140 cm (39,5" x 79")

The "Dakar" - 1999

The "Paris - Dakar" is an annual and international car race between Paris and Dakar through France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritany, Mali, Burkina Faso and Republic of Senegal.
By the invitation of Hubert Auriol, multiple winner of the “Paris - Dakar” rally who then became the T.S.O. Race organizer, I left with my caddie, my paints and paint brushes to capture the african landscape in the different stages of the rally. Heat, wind and sand were part of the game, up at 6:00am, pack up the tent and leave. No time to scout. Find some water to paint with, paint for 2 or 3 hours, set up the tent. A race within a race...

It is from more than 30 years that I spend most of my holidays in Corsica, the so well named "Ile de Beauté" - "Island of Beauty"
In was in 1998, that I began this Corsican series by depicting the trees - cork-oaks, pines, palm-trees, cactus... - and their so particular structures.

Bridges of Paris - 1996

Over the period of a year, I went down the Seine from east to west to (re)discover the magical atmosphere of the bridges of Paris. From the oldest (le Pont Marie) to the one in the process of being restored (Alexandre lll) to the one under construction (Charles de Gaulle) I traveled along the river banks in all weather conditions. I took the time to observe, to dream and to feel that universe that a lot of parisians experience...

The "Diplonosaur" - 1993

With the authorization of Philippe Taquet, Director of the Museum of Natural History of the Jardin des Plantes, I was able to set up my easel for one year in the Grande Gallery of paleontology. From these 170 million year old entangled skeletons and the 19th century metallic structure the “Diplonosaure” emerged. The 42 fragments observed were done in a similar way as archeological sites are squared off. The "Diplonosaur" is captured life size on a canvas 21 m x 4,5 m.

42 paintings - acrylic on canvas - large size - 150 x 150 cm (59" x 59")

"Live from New-York" - 1991

Fascinated by the urban energy and architecture of New York, I decided to go in 1991. In two weeks, I achieved 2 panoramic paintings of 360 degrees from two New York City buildings. “The Parson School of Design” and “The Parker Meridian”. To reconstruct the panoramic paintings, every day 2 paintings of 1,8 m x 1,8 m were sent from NY via Federal Express at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris to be part of an exhibition in the airport terminal.

The " Parson School of Design" series - 15 paintings - acrylic on canvas 180 x 180 cm (71" x 71")
